Spaying a dog is the single biggest vet bill most dog owners will face outside of emergencies. Prices are all over the place. You're looking at anywhere from £200 to over £500 depending on where you go and what procedure they use.
what the numbers actually look like
- Open surgery spay: £200–£450
- Keyhole/laparoscopic spay: £350–£500
- Pre-operative blood tests: £40–£80 (sometimes included, often extra)
- Post-operative pain relief: £20–£50
- Follow-up check: Usually free, sometimes £15–£25
open surgery vs. keyhole — what's the difference?
Open spay is traditional. One incision, ovaries/uterus removed, stitched up. Recovery takes 10-14 days. Keyhole uses tiny incisions, a camera, and specialized instruments. Recovery is 5-7 days, less pain, less scarring — but you're paying £100–£150 more.
There's no medical reason one is "better" if there are no complications. Vets who've invested in laparoscopic equipment push it because it's more profitable. That doesn't mean it's wrong — just know what you're paying for.
why do prices vary so much?
About 60% of UK practices are now corporate-owned. They tend to push premium options. Independent practices vary wildly — some are cheaper, some pricier, but there's more room to negotiate.
If your vet quotes £450 for open surgery and another quotes £250, find out why. Different anesthetics? Different pain management? The difference usually isn't quality — it's just how they run their business.
how to get a quote
- Is the quote open or keyhole? Makes a big difference.
- What's included? Anesthesia, blood work, pain relief, post-op check?
- What happens if complications arise? Do they charge extra?
- Do you offer payment plans? Some practices will finance larger procedures.
timing matters
Most vets recommend spaying before the first heat (around 6 months). Don't wait until it's urgent. Spaying a dog in heat is more complicated, more expensive, and riskier. If price is the blocker, check with Vet Fair. We've got pricing from 1,300+ practices across the UK.
